War Never Changes: The General Fallout Thread

Post by Simple Torture »

I know we have a '76 thread, but I feel like talking about older FO games, damnit.

Just started FO4 like a week ago; it's the first game I'm playing in-depth on my PS4 Pro (i.e., it's not Megaman or Rogue Legacy). Loving the experience so far. On the surface there's not that many differences between this and FO3, but the feeling of just wandering the Wasteland, discovering new locations, meeting NPCs, fucking picking off raiders, running from creatures, and feeling immersed is something I wish I could mainline, it's so much fun to me. Barely into the main quest now (just arrived at Diamond City, talking to all the merchants now--on the side I've helped a few settlements and slayed some ghouls), and excited to sink some time in it over the next few weeks. Would like to get through most of the game before '76 comes out so I can join you all there early, but playing only 1-2 hours a night, so that probably won't happen.

Controversial opinion alert: ...I don't think New Vegas was that good.

When you get to Diamond City, just remember the band won't actually take the stage until 8 pm.

I really want to go back and finish Fallout Tactics. Its the only one I never finished, but I did like it. The difficulty near the end was murderous though.

The exploration in these games is probably my favorite of any game series, ever. Coming up on weird radioactive shit and exploring ancient nuclear bunkers is just the best. The Glowing Sea in particular is one of the coolest things I've ever experienced in a video game.

Fallout 3 might be the worst game I’ve ever played. Loathe this series. Bethesda is trash.

Was it the glitches? The green color palette? The RPG elements? The weight of the character slowing you down?

I hate literally everything about its mechanics. It’s a broken, unplayable game as far as I’m concerned. Like pretty much all Bethesda games.

I need to go back and beat 1, 2 and Tactics. As Burt said, those older ones are tough going.

I played through 1 and 2 several times. I loved how different the play experience could be depending on how you built your character. This has unfortunately been lost in the later games.

The latest FO4 update, which came out like 6 days ago, fixed the game-breaking bug that had kept me away from the game for like 5-6 months. Hooray!

Watching the latest FO76 developments closely. Some of the new content they're adding (like NPCs) makes it sound more like something I would enjoy. Every once in a while I see used copies for like $14.99, and if it drops much lower I may need to pick it up.

Finally giving Fallout 76 a try, and it’s not so bad. However, I can only imagine what this was like at launch considering there were no NPCs at the time. It has its flaws, and in general I’m not a fan of online games, but it’s a nice bridge to Starfield.

I tried to get into New Vegas recently and found it pretty boring. Much like Skyrim, the gameplay loop is largely: become overburdened > trek back to town to sell some shit > repeat. Weird how it's considered the crown jewel of the series by many.

I think I'm beginning to agree with LV here. Bethesda is easily the most overrated game developer in history.

I just recently replayed FO3 and New Vegas for the first time in 10 years. Surprisingly, my opinion from that time has flipped, and I liked Nee Vegas more of the two this time through. FO3 just comes across as bland and empty by comparison, which is ironic because the NV map is so much bigger and filled with…empty space! But the world feels more alive, companions feel like they matter, the world lets you go anywhere but teaches you where you should and shouldn’t go based on level, and the storytelling really works for me.

I like FO76 for some of the same reasons (big world, tons to do), even if the always-online aspect isn’t what I prefer. It’s tough when you’re running into a nest of super mutants and you can’t quick save beforehand. It’s actually wicked noticeable that merchants as they’ve appeared in other Bethesda games are not present—you do need caps for buying ammo and such, but you can’t quickly turn around items you find on quests. This has made it tougher to improve your gear quickly, in my experience.
