Gillian Welch

Gillian and Dave have been a mainstay on our stereo for the last few years and I have yet to tire of them. Soul Journey is the album that has been satisfying me as of late. It's like Gillian's album with the backing band from Dylan's Desire.

She doesn't tour much, but check her out if she does. Great shows!

I saw her live with Greg? Brown and Ani Difranco, like 13 years ago or something. Great concert. Girl I was with hated Gillian.

The entire Revelator album is fantastic....especially the title song. Somehow, I never got around to buying more.

Revelator is great. It is a grower.

Her first album, Revival, is fantastic as well.

Time (The Revelator) and Soul Journey are fantastic. The others a really strong.

Love the new covers album.

Best tracks are Revelator, Everything Is Free, Wrecking Ball and I Dream a Highway. Oh man they are so good.

tragabigzanda wrote:Really digging Boots #2. I’m mixed on the covers record. I just don’t love any song where Dave takes the lead vocal. Something about his voice strikes me as whiny...He’s amazing when he’s supporting Gillian, but I’ve always kind of bristled at his solo stuff.
I agree completely however the cover of Senor is gorgeous. The sway to Dave may have started.

Time the Revelator and Harrow and the Harvest are almost otherworldly in their perfection. She was on a poetic wavelength that kind of melts my brain. How do you even write a song like I Dream a Highway if it's not appearing to you in a biblical vision?

Perhaps my favorite track from the new album:

For some reason I wanna put on John Martyn's Don't Want To Know after the song ends. There's definitely something similar in those two.

My initial response to the album is mixed. I was a little disappointed when it was announced as a Gillian Welch and David Rawlings record and lo it came to pass that his contributions are the weaker.

Overall, the fuller instrumentation works just fine. Everything sounds warm and full.

I think the standout track for me is Here Stands a Woman. The song seems totally devoid of meter or at least always shifting so you never settle in. The waltz feel makes you think it's in three, but really it's in four and sometimes five. It really gives the feel of a person who has come apart at the seams and serves the lyric perfectly.

Yep, they were awesome in Toowoomba. A really special show.
