Exile in Guyville is better than almost every Pearl Jam album.

The ’90s were an odd decade.

Back then, a young, impressionable person could discover an artist through Rolling Stone and still feel like they were “underground.” Such was the case with Liz Phair; her 1993 debut Exile In Guyville was full of unorthodox chord progressions and radio-unfriendly lyrics, yet there she was in the pages of everyone’s favorite corporate rock magazine.

Despite never even achieving gold status, the album remains an enduring indie classic; Phair has made lots of great music since 1993, but nothing she or anyone else has ever released sounds anything like Guyville.

Guyville, Whip-Smart, and Whitechocolatespaceegg are monster records. I adore all three of them. Basically, every track on those first three albums are damn good to fucking outstanding.

I actually don't hate Liz Phair, Somebody's Miracle or Funstyle, but those records are nowhere near as consistent or good as the first three. I kinda love how bananas Funstyle is. That might be my favorite of the final three.

She also has some outstanding b-sides and outtakes. I really dig a lot of the castoffs from the self-titled sessions.

There are a handful of tracks on S/T and Somebody's Miracle that adore and frequently spin and/or include on mixes/playlists. But there's a lot to dislike, too. Like a lot, a lot.
