Music Documentaries

Post by Blaine Ryan »

Credit to plat for making me think of this with his "Concert Films" thread.

What are some of your favorites?

I tend to enjoy these even when I don't particularly like the artist(s) involved. Metallica's Some Kind of Monster -- which chronicles the making of St. Anger -- is a good example; I think I've watched it at least 3-4 times, despite not really caring for the band and finding the album largely unlistenable. There's something about getting a bird's eye view into the recording process that I really love.

Bob Dylan's No Direction Home, Tom Petty's Runnin' Down a Dream and Drive-By Truckers' The Secret to a Happy Ending are a couple other favorites, off the top of my head.

Making a note of these.

The Beatles Anthology is also pretty fantastic.

I have a soft spot for Depeche Mode 101. It's sooooo very 80s and it reminds me of when I was a little kid.

I forget what it's called, but there's one that goes through the writing and recording of Dark Side Of The Moon.
