Movie Artwork

Post by LoathedVermin72 »

I love movie art. I have it hanging on my walls, and lord knows I have tonnnnnns of it on all the physical media releases I own. Good movie art is just that - art. It should be enticing, it should make an impression, it should represent the movie somehow, and it should be aesthetically pleasing on its own merits. It's not easy to do well. Below are a few of my favorites, but there are many, many more I could choose.

THEATRICAL POSTER ART

Image

Simple, elegant, menacing, and with one of the most iconic, frightening taglines in film history. The images on the poster aren't even taken from the movie, which wasn't uncommon in the '70s - instead, they're an impressionistic interpretation of the movie that convey a sense of dread. Ultimately, nothing could be more faithful to what's being advertised.

Image

Alien: Covenant is a weird, wild, wacky movie that injects all kinds of existential and religious overtones into the Alien mythology, and this baroque tableau perfectly captures its bizarre, grandiose ambitions. It's also just a beautiful piece of art.

Image

I love Anthropophagus, and the iconic artwork very wisely depicts its most memorable moment, spoilers be damned.

Image

Could anyone ask for a more delightfully exploitative exploitation poster? All those amazing one-line hooks!

Image

Just about all of the film's plot motifs captured in one expressionistic image. The blending of water and smoke is so beautifully executed. (I have a slightly different version of this poster hanging in my bedroom.)

Image

I love, love, love the interplay of colors in this one. The '80s airbrush style is just that close to being kitsch, but not quite there. (I have this hanging in my living room.)

Image

Some of the best horror artwork ever. Atmospheric, evocative, and so perfectly '80s.

Image

I love the almost-photorealistic painting style. It does a great job capturing the nighttime city atmosphere I love so much in the movie. And the "SIZE DOES MATTER" tagline is a classic. (I have a small, horizontal version of this hanging in my bedroom.)

Image

What needs to be said? So simple, so iconic. Perfection. And that huge, bold, red typeface against the white and blue...AH!

Image

Perhaps the most infamous movie poster in history. You know you're in for something wonderfully sick and twisted when you get one glance at this thing. The bulging crotch is what really puts it over the top. Hostel did a nice homage:

What a beautiful poster. I don't even know what else to say. I should really track down a print of this.

Image

Another one of cinema's greatest taglines: "Who will survive and what will be left of them?" A truly great, demented poster. I've always loved the use of white borders/backgrounds on '70s movie posters. (I have this one hanging in my living room.)

Image

I guess this doesn't technically qualify as "theatrical" since it's a Mondo poster. Also, for the record, I fucking HATE Mondo artwork with a passion. That said, this is the only one you'll ever see me praise. It doesn't even do that great of a job capturing the movie (What the hell is that creature in the foreground? Because it sure ain't from the movie.), but I love the image so much that it overwhelms all of my better judgment. So atmospheric, creepy, unsettling. I could stare at it for hours.

HOME VIDEO ART

Image

I don't even like this movie all that much, but I love this SteelBook art so much that I bought it. It looks especially handsome in person, and that top border is part of a clear slipcover, which reveals the unmarred Alex Ross painting when removed.

Image

I already posted about this one recently, and it was part of the impetus for this thread. Simple, romantic, classy.

Image

I generally find "less is more" is the best approach to home video art, and this is a masterclass in that. It beautifully captures the warm-city-night pulse of this movie.

Image

I can't get enough of the rich, bleeding colors in this artwork. Everything has such a pleasing, watery flow.

Image

One of the newest additions to my collection, and the artwork is a big part of why I bought it. Hard to imagine a more dreamy, evocative cover.

Image

Talk about a striking image. Single-handedly lured me into seeing the movie (and I'm very glad it did, because the movie's great).

Show me some more beautiful images, RM.
