Biggest year in tv/movie history?

Is it 2019?

Movies - Yeah, there are loads of sequels, as usual, but there are 3 franchise culminations:
Avengers: Endgame - wraps up a 10 year, nearly 20 movie story
Star Wars 9 - end of Skywalker saga - 42 years
Toy Story 4 - will it ruin a perfect trilogy?

TV - so many great or seminal shows are wrapping up:
Game of Thrones - stick the dismount and we’re talking best show ever.
Veep: if you didn’t watch, you missed one of the best ensemble casts ever, and JLD put herself in company with Lucille Ball and Mary Tyler Moore
Deadwood movie: holy shit, cocksucker!
Orange is the New Black: way past its expiration date, but this show paved the way for netflix originals.
Elementary: final season of the best Sherlock Holmes ever. Ruddo knows.
Downton Abbey movie: my wife said this is a big deal.
Stranger Things 3: Okay, this one isn’t wrapping up, but fuck you. I love this show.

Fair question. I guess I mean I can’t think of a year where a larger amount of people have anticipated at least one major tv or movie event. Star Wars is arguably the most widely loved movie franchise ever. Over the last 10 years, has any cluster of movies meant more to more people than Marvel movies? As far as tv goes, GoT is one of those rare, seemingly universally anticipated, discussed, and analyzed series that has become a cultural phenomena, like Lost was. I didn’t mean best; originals will always drive that argument. I just can’t think of a previous year where the culmination of so many beloved and long-running stories is occurring. 2019 feels like a final chapter, and for middle-aged people like me, I can’t imagine I’ll ever be this invested in so many things that are coming to an end within months of each other.

I’m pretty sure Seinfeld, Saved By The Bell, and Wayne’s World were all happening at the same time so you are way, way off.

Disney will certainly obliterate box office records for one company

Captain marvel
Endgame
Episode IX
Toy story 4
Frozen 2
Aladdin
Jungle book

Plus whatever else they have coming out.

I meant that instead of Jungle Book.

I think 1999 is my favorite year in movie history, but that's not the same thing

The Ringer just completed a whole week covering movies from 1999. There really were some great ones.

I'd like to throw 1983 into the ring. For TV, all I should really have to say is M.A.S.H. and Cheers, but movies:

Trading Places
Risky Business
Scarface
Outsiders
RotJ
A Christmas Story
Flashdance
Octopussy
Meaning of Life
Strange Brew
Jaws 3
Krull
Christine

- The box office might be down this year despite all that. Disney probably won't notice though.

- '82 or '84 for movies for me. Tough call.

- GoT jumped the shark for me but I'll probably watch the last episodes eventually.
