I don’t expect any further changes to be made to the OT now that Lucas is out, but I doubt these will be the original theatrical versions, so there will still be plenty to complain about. Quite rightly, IMO.

I want a super mega collection that has every version of each film every released.

I just don't see any reason why the original theatrical releases cant' co-exist with Lucas's "ultimate, preferred, SE" vision. It's so stupid. Just put BOTH versions out in the best quality possible and make it is you can't buy one without the other. Everybody wins.

The only loser is shelf space in that scenario.

It’s because Lucas altered the original negatives to make the SEs. Disney/Fox would need to do an expensive, painstaking, time-consuming reconstruction from archival film materials to create a 4K transfer of the original theatrical versions.

Also, Lucas doesn’t want them to do that, though I don’t know how much that matters anymore.

To your first point --- I had no idea. That's really interesting and honestly helps.

To your second --- as long as KK is there it matters big time. She's been adamant that those movies are George's movies and they will respect his wishes. I personally believe there was also an "off-the-record" sort of agreement as well. But I have no real proof of that. Just stuff I've heard from folks who work in and around Lucasfilm.

I guess if KK steps down and/or when George dies... MAYBE. But even then, it seems doubtful. Especially give what you said about the altered original negatives.

There’s a good few unaltered original prints still out there. I think the smithsonian and the American film institute have originals as far as I know? But there are also unaltered transfers for the laser disc release that was used for the dvd release but they’re shitty quality apparently. I have that set and it looks fine to me but others say they’re a crappy quality. Colour grading and graininess seem to be the complaint.


This super deluxe boxset will come but as Joe said, throw everything in. The original and SE and all the making of stuff.

I stopped buying movies in general after I bought TFA. It felt so good not to need to be a completionist anymore. Plus I don't watch movies that much anyway so if I want to watch a movie I have Netflix or the library.

I'm not disparaging anyone else if they like buying movies, I was just finding it interesting reading this thread and not having any desire to buy movies.



Plus I have one of those despecialized versions of all three movies that try to keep the OT as original as possible. They look good.

I don't buy much physical media anymore either, but it is dangerous to rely on any streaming service to have movies you want to watch for long.
