Musical Interventions

Have you ever had to sit a friend down and lay it out for them how bad their taste in music is? I’m pretty tolerant of just about everything, but I have a friend who 10 years ago or so ended up in a rap-rock band and has gone all in on the genre. He posts links to HedPE songs and the like on his Facebook page, which might be the worst band I’ve ever heard, with lyrics that sound like a 12-year-old wrote them. It’s absolute garbage white-trash music, and this is a guy who really should know better. But he’s caught up in “the local scene” and seems to buy it all. He’s also approaching 50. I think he needs an intervention.

Sometimes he slips a little too far into character and types things like “fasho,” which is apparently shorthand for “for sure.” I watched some hedPE videos and if they haven’t played the Gathering of the Juggalos yet I’m sure they will soon.

When you say he's better than that I have to stop you right there... If he enjoys it and it's what he prefers to listen to, so be it and it says something about his character. You might need a new friend or just accept him for who he is.

I do accept him, we are the best of friends and have been for almost 30 years. He’s just built up his identity around the band he was in, and I get it, they are “high-energy” bands and all and the shows are fun for him. The kind of people that music seems to attract is, well, trashy to put it gently. I honestly don’t know if he truly likes the music or if he plays the part for acceptance.

Hmm... are there are other things about his personality that make you go "hmmmm"? Does he have a chain connected to his wallet? What does he smell like? What clothes does he wear? Does he wear hipster sunglasses like
