Obama was a bit lackadaisical in filling court vacancies in the first six years of his presidency, and when Dems lost the Senate McConnell instructed his caucus to say no to more than just Merrick Garland in the judiciary. The GOP, who has historically cared about the courts more, has been more aggressive in getting them filled, and it helps them that the courts are one thing that Trump doesn't care much about and where he's willing to follow.

A future Dem president would likely realign the courts, but it might go at a slower pace even if the president's party is more motivated since the GOP appointees are likely to be younger.

I honestly think Mitch McConnell will be written about by historians much more than any politician who wasn't president in this era.
