One of my favorites growing up. Sad to hear about Ric's passing. liebzz has inspired me to do a catalog listen-through. I'm somewhat familiar with a lot of their stuff, but haven't listened to much of them lately.
Also, just listen to this musical perfection:

Their first album - The Cars - is essentially a greatest hits for them. A lot of casual late 70's/early 80's music fans know most of the songs on this album. Let the Good Times Roll, My Best Friend's Girl, Just What I Needed, You're All I've Got Tonight, Moving in Stereo, All Mixed Up. It is a great album that starts Let the Good Times Roll, which is perfect. Listening to that pretty much tells you everything you are going to get from this album. Nothing too serious, and a great mix of late 60's rock and early 80's "pop" rock. What a great album.

The second album Candy-O is only a slight step down from the first. It's really good.

I didn't like their 80s stuff nearly as much, but was happy for their success.
They tweaked their sound without totally selling out to the times... it was more of a natural extension of their old sound.

Yeah Panorama and Shake It Up are mostly misses. Heartbeat City has Mutt Lange all over it but many of the songs are strong. Door to Door the best songs are Leave Or Stay and Ta Ta Wayo Wayo which were old songs from the 70s. They have like 18-20 great songs that's more than any band can hope for.

I'm going to listen to their catalogue over the coming weeks. I've got the 1985 Greatest Hits and always thought that that was enough. It's probably top 5 best of compilations ever.

Good deal. I'm slowly working my way through. I have some saved drafts to post once I listen through again. Hard to top that first album though.

The first 2 albums are essential and pretty much "Greatest Hits" albums themselves.
Everything after that is fairly disappointing, and the real "Greatest Hits" album covers most of the good stuff.

You probably know most of the first album. I thought I only knew More Than A Feeling then I listened to the first Boston album recently and I knew every song. Like inside and out. I don't remember ever listening to Boston. Some shit is just in the air.

Beato unpacks Just What I Needed--easily one of the greatest songs of all time.
