I still enjoy a well done live album. I want as little overdubbing and edits as possible and no backing tracks, though I don't mind triggered tracks. It is getting tough to come by.

But that was quite a while ago and yet, as we are about to entire the second decade of the 21st century, some acts are still putting out live albums

That was a waste of a read. Not really all that thought through and more of a meandering rant.

Anyways, I fall on the side of greatest hits being pointless releases now since everything is basically at your fingertips and you no longer, as a consumer, need to hedge your bets and wallet on an artist before you dive in.

Live albums are great because they at least offer a compelling recreation of songs from artists you care about, and when they are really good, transport you to another place, if not for a couple of hours.

Many are pointless, some are worthy additions to an artists discography. Live Neil and Bob are the best.
