I know what I expect to hear when I seek out Post Rock. I do not understand what you mean by "Instrumental Rock" however.

Perhaps some YouTube links in thread of examples would be useful.

Any rock that doesnt have lyrics. From what ive heard so far, most post rock has lyrics and is a particular style (no guitar solos and the music builds to a fast ending). Pelican dont have guitar solos but what they do on guitar is equally good, imo.

I was disappointed with their last album though. Seems like they didnt bring the melodies on this one. I might give it another listen sometime.

Colloquially, "post-rock" is used as a term for a mostly instrumental style of rock. Pelican usually gets put under that term. It's true that there is music with vocals that gets labeled as post-rock, especially in the early '90s, but its not the majority nowadays.

I'm curious what you consider post-rock, since it seems at odds with the common term. Instrumental rock is a more literal descriptor, sure, but I almost think it might be too broad for a single thread.

I like that Pelican's disappointing recent album is enough to prevent DWFB from making a straight up Pelican thread instead of this one.

After rereading the post i can see how it might have came across that way. Its not the case tho. I didnt know if a pelican thread existed (finding existing threads on this phone isnt easy or always possible). Also, there are other bands besides pelican who are purely instrumental: red sparrows, russian circles, grails, djam karet, karma to burn etc. Instrumental rock covers different genres also, like post rock, jazz fusion, shredders (buckethead, animals as leaders), doom, etc. So yeah, it is a broad thread/topic.
