CMM is irritating but not nearly as irritating as Happy, which is probably one of my most hated songs in history.

This is one of the greatest things to happen this decade
And Happy is soooooo bad.

Yeah.
I totally understand why people would dislike "Call Me Maybe"; it is pure unabashed sugar, like other genre-defining bubblegum pop songs. But I still love it. I think it does a great job at capturing the nervous energy, the breathless anticipation of attraction. I love how that's expressed in the arrangement in the chorus, how the lyrics are broken up by stabs of thick synths and guitars, like doubt and anxiety creeping in. And then the bridge ("before you came into my life...") is just so catchy, it could've been its own separate song. I really like the guitar in that part.
"Call Me Maybe" only hints at the better stuff that CRJ would do next (her next album Emotion is great, the follow-up Dedicated might be even better) but I really think it's kind of perfect in its modest ambitions. There's a lot of tension and release, a lot of anxiety and lovedrunk giddiness packed into a pocket-sized pop song. There are several better songs in the tournament, but this song has a special place in my heart.
I also think it's really funny how similar the chord progression is to "Life Wasted" but that's beside the point.

And also yeah "Happy" is just all-around bad

The praise CRJ got for her subsequent albums kinda made me feel validated in the appreciation I always had for Call Me Maybe as a catchy, tightly written song. But also my sugar tolerance level in music is pretty high.

I do give CMM props for being the basis of this, a song I love dearly:

I love Call Me Maybe. It's the very definition of a bubblegum pop song. It's perfectly upbeat and catchy. The bit of uncertainty to it helps hit those ideas of early attraction and romance as they come through the filter of youthful innocence.

I love the sample (I think it's a sample -- the orchestral hook anyway) in "Call Me Maybe."
I struggle with the message in the chorus. Is it really that "crazy" to give your number to someone you just met? Seems like this is a perfectly reasonable thing to do after you meet someone, if you want to talk to them again.
