Deerhoof | New Album

Post by Royalearth »

I Will Spite Survive (from their last album). Missed this one when it came out. So great:

New album:

Deerhoof have been terrific for many years. Adventurous, creative & prolific.

Hey, another Deerhoof fan on here! I've kind of fallen off them in the last 6 years or so, but I'm looking forward to this new one to see if I can rekindle my interest. I think The Runners Four is their primo album, the strongest balance of their compositional abilities and their left-field weirdness.

What's the best Deerhoof album? They've always seemed like something I could get into, I'm listening to Friend Opportunity and it's good.

I really love Apple and Milk Man. That period is sweet for me. I need to dive deeper into The Runners Four again. Never head it in it's entirety. My suggestion: just explore....They have so many great quality songs across their entire career! They are definitely a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band in my eyes.

Btw, their guitarist John Dieterich reminds me so much of Stone Gossard and the way he plays-- they are are like the living reincarnation of each other. :haha: It would be cool to see them collaborate one day.

A little while back, I finally decided to pick up Future Teenage Cave Artists on Bandcamp, figuring I'd never get a chance to give the album some proper attention if I wasn't able to play it whenever, as all my previous listens had been in the evening before bed, not really a great timeframe for this kind of music. Well, it paid off, as I managed to move past my surface disconnect with the music and find a clearer throughline to what I consider the golden age of Deerhoof music (Reveille through Deerhoof vs. Evil). It doesn't hit the highs as well as the best of their older music, but I think it more successfully ties their recent aesthetic and compositional choices to a stronger, more focused direction that kinda got lost after Deerhoof vs. Evil. I remember liking some of Mountain Moves, so I think I'll probably revisit that soon and see if it connects any deeper, and then I'll probably go back and check out The Magic, the album where I fell off the cart.
