Dismantle the corporate food machine, one item at a time

Feeling like between the sourdough craze, the baby led weaning schedule we are doing for the baby's food, and ruddo's sun tea recipe, I'm spending less and less on buying prepackaged food and drink. Certainly a lot of this is pandemic mindset, but it feels great to be able to make what I used to buy...and for a fraction of the cost.

What kinds of stuff do you guys take the time to make?

Here it's been hamburger buns, tortillas, protein bars, bread, tea, cold brew, apple sauce, some other stuff too.

When I say "sourdough bread" I also mean bread in general. I've got bun and sandwich bread recipes that, while technically using a sourdough yeast starters, have near zero sourdough flavor by design.

killer smoothies.
We make these catch-all muffin things to introduce various fruits and veggies to our baby. They always have some sort of flour (coconut, almond, etc) and some oats. I was making them one day when I had an aha moment realizing that I was really just making a protein smoothie in a different form. Hence the DIY protein bar I hinted at in the header. So versatile.

That's spot on, Trag. Add eggs to that and put it in a muffin tin and you're good to go!

Take that CLIF and Lärabar. Boom. Dismantled.

*Actually I'm sure CLIF and Lärabar are decent companies, but still.
