It's-a Me, Mario: A Mario Thread

Post by Norah »

We have a Mario Kart thread, and a Mario Maker thread, but no thread for the franchise as a whole, or a place to talk about Mario games that don't need their own thread. Well now we do.

I finished the Paper Mario: Origami King the other day and it was so much better than I ever thought it could be. Not just fun, but funny, and very well written. Olivia was a great character, and

Bobby's sacrifice
is something I'll never forget.

“You know that memory-loss thing? What's it called... Ambrosia? Amnesty? Thinky Thinky Panic? Whatever you call it, I've got it—big time.” Immortal words from one of the franchise's all time great characters.

Went through and got the *96 stars on S M World earlier during quarantine and loved every damn second of it. Except the parts where I had to share the controller with my kids occasionally.

If you pitched me the concept of a fat short plumber character who ran around jumping on mushrooms etc. I’d say you could do better. Goes to show it’s about the style/execution more than substance sometimes.

Mario Odyssey underwhelms me. It was fun, but 750 post-Bowser stars is dumb. I have got to be the only person in the world whose favorite Mario games are Doki Doki Panic and Mario Sunshine.

Sunshine has a cult following. The mechanics of the game are top notch, but the lack of variety in art styles/locales holds it back for me. I would be thrilled to play it again in an HD remake.

Nintendo is currently hiring 2D developers. It has to be for a new 2D Mario. What else could it be?

And Sunshine is definately the red-headed step-child of the 3D Mario's. By far my least favorite.

The Paper Mario franchise is solid. Although not "Paper," Super Mario RPG might be the best game in the Paper franchise. If you have an SNES Classic, check it out.

However long ago I fired up Sunshine and had forgotten the nuances of the controls for spraying the water, so I just gave up and turned it off.

I did play the game through entirely when it first came out, but did not love it by any means. More of an obligation, really.
