I still can’t believe they butchered that song so badly.
That edit, and the others like it (e.g. on various Vault bootlegs), genuinely have negatively impacted my view of the band, and Ed specifically.
It’s both pathetic and just inexplicably weird.

The edit pulling out his poorly delivered joke about slamming was also removed. So self-conscious!

I don’t think I’ve ever heard the version with Beth in it and I can’t imagine that hearing it now would make me feel like I’d missed anything.

I don't think I'd ever heard the Oceans edited before.
Is it also edited on the Ten Deluxe DVD?

Do you think his wife would be upset about him saying Beth in a song 30 years ago?

My guess is it’s more about his friend Beth wanting to move on with her life.
I guess, but the only reason anyone's talking about it is because it was removed

I'm not really concerned with removing off the cuff stage banter, though that's also weird.
I just can't think of any other band/artist who's made such a brutal post hoc edit of a song lyric like Oceans from the Unplugged performance. It's truly bizarre once you hear it.
I can only imagine the conversation with the poor engineer directed to do something, anything to remove that lyric and make it sound halfway listenable.

Yes, the original source of the edited version is the DVD from the 2009 Ten deluxe box set. They've used that same mix on every subsequent release.
I'm very aware this is a strange thing to care about but it's been more than 10 years and it still drives me crazy.
