There's things inside them that turn off and on again really quickly. Then they become sentient and try to murder you in your sleep.

there's a bunch of ones and zeros who get together and be friends in all kinds of conglomerations.
And then they get sent out in packets through wires and sometimes not even wires so I guess with lasers!

My computer has been slow for ages and I couldn't figure out why until I looked in the box and saw that some wires were getting wrapped around the CPU fan, so Windows was throttling the hell out of my PC. Lucky it didnt fry.
