I'm getting a new iPad soon, and I'm looking into media server options so that I would be able to stream content (mostly movies, TV shows, etc.) directly to that device. For years I've been using Plex for streaming to various Roku devices in the house, but it doesn't allow streaming to mobile devices--I could in theory use a browser, but it's a pain in the ass. I would be willing to pay for an app that allows this, but Plex is pretty steep--like $5 per month or $120 flat.
Does anyone have any Plex alternatives that they use that would maybe work on an iPad and Roku? I would also just settle for iOS. I'm not looking to spend more than $25 or so for access, but would, of course, accept something free or cheaper.
What do you all use?

What are you watching on roku that you can’t just download the app of what you want to watch? Sorry, I might be confused as to what you are asking.

I don't think I was clear, sorry! So, I'm looking to stream movies and TV shows that I've downloaded. So not Netflix or Hulu, my own files. That bit of info makes a LOT of difference, I suppose.

Thought about this thread when reading ruddo’s CD thread yesterday. Can’t believe I was actually on the fence about getting a Plex Pass—I bought it on sale a few years ago for $99 (lifetime subscription) and have never looked back. I’m thinking about creating a home media server as a project this year. Recently discovered that there’s an app called PlexAmp that allows you to stream your digital music collection from anywhere, and it’s basically replaced Spotify and my MP3 player over the past few weeks. Highly recommend.
