Re: 26. Immortality vs. Given to Fly
oof
Immortality is the better song, and the one I am more likely to seek out, though I've never liked it quite as much as I liked GTF in its prime (especially coming off of No Code. Like World Wide Suicide it was a lead single that redeemed and reinvigorated my love and faith in the band after a comparatively fallow stretch).
Vote for Immortality, but these are both titans.

Two monster tracks. Easily the biggest matchup of the first round so far. Given to Fly always had the more immediate and obvious emotional uplift for me, but it was Immortality that dug deeper. My vote is with the latter.

Is this the final? What ever is going on?
Immortality. But Given To Fly doesn't deserve this treatment so early on.

I just don’t care for GTF at all anymore. I skip it every time.

Never loved it. I appreciate it, but I don't really enjoy it. Great song though.wease wrote:I just don’t care for GTF at all anymore. I skip it every time.

When Yield came out I was obsessed with that song. The album cut just soars to great heights. Live performances have rarely done it justice.tragabigzanda wrote:Never loved it. I agree about the soaring, but what really got lost for me in the live set is the hard "Flying!" part. In the studio is slices through the glommy production of the verses like a knife, all jagged and gnarly. On the stage it's just kind of there.PHATJ wrote:When Yield came out I was obsessed with that song. The album cut just soars to great heights. Re: 26. Immortality vs. Given to Fly
Completely agree. The album cut is top tier, but live doesn’t cut it. Plus playing it live in fast forward killed all the nuance.tragabigzanda wrote:I agree about the soaring, but what really got lost for me in the live set is the hard "Flying!" part. It gave it a rumbling momentum I quite like but it’s not like there is a slow live baseline to really compare it to

Wait how is this a first round matchup? I'm going Immortality but Given To Fly definitely deserves to hang around longer than this.

Re: 26. Immortality vs. Given to Fly
I like Immortality, but it's one of several PJ songs that people seem to hold in the highest tier, and it's just not there for me. There's at least 6 or so songs above it on Vitalogy. None of this is to say it's a bad song, but it's like a 3.5 or 4 when everyone else seems to rate it 6 out of 5.
GTF is one of their greatest moments in the studio, and I continue to hear new things when I go back to it (I remember the last time I heard it really catching onto the riff Stone or Mike is playing in the background of the chorus). They found a way to write an anthem mirroring the uplift of a song like Alive, but writing in in a way that makes it sound timeless in a way that song does not. Do they butcher it by trying to set a speed record when they play it now? Definitely, but I'm voting for the song, not for the song as it's played in 2018.

Yeah this is straight crazy. Would have guess this as a quarterfinal or semifinal matchup.ABNorman wrote:This is brutal.

Immortality, walking away.
This one isn't tough for me.
Though it is weird to think that one of these will be out soon. This is the kind of thing that could be a championship match. But if it were, it would still be an easy vote.

Re: 26. Immortality vs. Given to Fly
I wouldn't say I was obsessed, but I played the shit out of that single. And since it came out before the album, it got a lot of plays. Probably why I love Pilate and Leatherman. But as time has gone on, and it's been played at practically every show and has grown to be one of the tunes the "civilians" expect to hear, I just can't stand it anymore. Mrs Wease gets pissed when I sit down when it's played at a show we're at.PHATJ wrote:When Yield came out I was obsessed with that song. The album cut just soars to great heights. lol at no seeding here - this could be the last two
Voted Immortality because I just listened to Melbourne 98 and Jack transcends reality at the end of the song there.
