Gonna See My Friend vs. Soon Forget

Neither of these songs get played much in my life for a reason. Friend I guess but I don't care at all.

GSMF has grown since its release from like a 2 to a 4 (out of 5).

I picked Soon Forget. It was a reaction song for me, and I quite enjoyed it being played live in good fun on the 2000 tour. Gonna See My Friend is okay but very paint by numbers latter day Pearl Jam.

I like both of these. But I feel like I've been disrespectful of Soon Forget in the past so it gets my vote tonight.

Honestly, I'm good with either song winning this round.

Soon Forget just does not land for me. The lyrics aren't half as cleric as they think they are and are far too smug and self-satisfied. I appreciate that it led to some better uke songs down the line, but this just doesn't work for me at all.


Gonna See My Friend is a gem, a great dirty rave up of a song. I love the upbeat explosive way it jumps out of the gate, and the bridge is super fun. Excellent energy all around. And I've always thought that it, like STBC, is something of a clever inversion of certain grunge tropes. Angry, ragged, music (although a bit more playful with GSMF) unexpectedly juxtaposed with pretty upbeat/happy subject matter. It's a much better song then it gets credit for. It's a solid 4/5 for me, probably my third favorite song on Backspacer, and an easy vote

I like how Soon Forget sounds when it arrives on Binaural. But it has lyrics, and they turn the song into a really petty diss track. I didn't care about dissing Bill Gates/Paul Allen back then, and sitting here in 2021 it just seems extra silly.

I'm always down for dissing on billionaires. Have always liked Soon Forget. Fuck those rich fucks. Yea I know Ed's rich, but still, fuck 'em. However, GSMF gets my vote.

For some reason GSMF has never landed with me. Along with Johnny Guitar it just feels like such a nothing song. I don't like it, I don't hate it, I nothing it.

Gonna See My Friend

Eh, I don't really know. Friend is maybe the better song (or at least has more going for it), but it should be; it's the opener of the record as opposed to a ditty near the end really only serving as an interlude between album centerpieces, and Soon Forget accomplishes that. I'll have to think.

I hate GSMF

When I found out I was gonna be a dad, bodysnatcher texted me "Gonna See My Fwend." That's still my favorite PJ pun of all time.
