Re: 43. Gone vs. Leatherman
I'll rail against leatherman in a later round if I have to.
I do genuinely like Gone, flaws and all. Like Ghost the lyrics are well intentioned if occasionally too on the nose (Springsteen is not a good lyrical muse for Eddie. He latches onto his worst elements as a writer and the empathy both of them are so great at finding feels either performative or condescending when Eddie draws from this particular well). It goes down easier with Ghost since the atmosphere is better and the song is more propulsive (Ghost is just a much better song in general). But still, I do think the verses capture a certain middle of the night highway loneliness. And I do really like the chorus. It is as 'by the numbers' as a pearl jam chorus has maybe ever gotten, but damn it, I like those numbers. The lift feels real, and that's always going to strike a chord with me.
Vote for Gone

The matchup of meh. The total opposite of the Given to Fly vs. Immortality faceoff.
Leatherman? I guess? At least the story it tells is more original.

I love Gone. Never understood the hate it gets.
But Leatherman is better and gets my vote.

Re: 43. Gone vs. Leatherman
I think what I said about U can apply to Leatherman, though I like this song a fair bit more. They're having fun with it, probably cause they know they're not making a song meant for a record that needs to be a part of any 'statement' they're making. I remember Jeff and Jack's work on this take sticking out to me.
Gone is one of my least favorite PJ songs on an album. I can find good things even in a lot of PJ songs I don't care for, but this one to me is kind of a slog.

Re: 43. Gone vs. Leatherman
I do admit that Gone lost a some of its charm when it became a full band album track. A lot of what I love about it is as an Ed demo that's a Christmas single track. I was always kinda bummed that they took it out of that original context.
But I still really like the song and I get a lot out of it.
Leatherman is still better and should win easily.
