I like Parting Ways. Don't love it. The atmosphere of the song is perfect for the subject matter, but it is executed a little too perfectly, and the cold and gathering distance cuts me off from the emotional core of the song. I prefer it live, where it turns into something slightly different.

Tremor Christ is Tremor Christ. I don't even know if it is top 20 for me (though as a composition it is clearly a better song then many of the things I've slotted in there), but it is undoubtedly one of the coolest songs in the catalog, and a true beast.

His flat affect for the outro against the suddenly quiet music, especially juxtaposed against the bridge, never fails to be striking as hell.

Love both songs, but seriously, Tremor Christ.

chud and tommy really gonna have to lean in hard to make their case that Parting Ways holds a candle to Tremor Christ

Either of these two songs against almost any other songs and I would have no doubt taken these. Got to take one. Tremor Christ is a song I have sung praises for more than 26 years. Parting Ways was always cool but I am still building my appreciation for this song listen by listen so...

Parting Ways is spooky, flowing , and wavy. It has emotion and lots of room to grow.

Tremor Christ comes out all crunchy .

This is maybe the hardest matchup for me so far. These two are very, very close. I'll go with Tremor Christ for now, although I think I probably return to Parting Ways more often.

Reading that new PJ book at the moment "Not For You" by Ronan Givony. He makes an argument that Tremor Christ was written at least partly as a response to Ed's New Orleans "You're not my Messiah" drunk and disorderly situation.
