Who Ever Said vs. I Got Shit

Man I hope Who Ever Said can pull this out. I Got Shit was a powerful song when it came out, but that power, like Footsteps (though the music is better) started to fade for me years ago. It is one of their more histrionic songs, though Eddie invests enough into the performance to make it feel real. The lyrics are good but feel a bit too stalkerish for the year of our lord 2021. It's a good song, but it doesn't move me anymore.

Who Ever Said is outstanding. I welcome the return of the album warm up before the band kicks in piece by piece. It's a muscular performance from Eddie and the band right out of the gate (the way Eddie growls out the word Drowin..) before the song takes a curiously light turn, like a brave sort of optimistic defiance before pivoting into a 3 minute bridge that is just amazing from start to finish, with some of my favorite extended sequences of lyrics in the catalog, some great break basswork from Jeff, some cool atmospheric coloring, and an overall effect of feeling propulsive and meditative at the same time. Just a stunning performance from everyone that bubbles over with an striking mix of barely contained disgust and a dogged refusal to give up. It's everything I want from grown up Pearl Jam.

Easy vote for Who Ever Said

I'm not sure which way I'm going to go on this one. The best thing about I got shit is Neil Young, and they can't replicate it live, so I'm leaning WES.

I Got Shit

Everything stip said about Who Ever Said is true. It's a 5-star song. But I Got Id (yeah, I still call it that) is the one I don't think I'll ever vote against. Point taken about it being Neil Young's solo, too. But that's not something I was aware of when the song first blew my mind and became, instantly, my favorite Pearl Jam recording. There's just no way around it.

Damn. I love Who Ever Said and I wish I could vote for it, but I Got Id might be in my top ten and WES just isn’t quite that.
