I hope their signing to Domino indicates that new stuff might be in the pipeline for real this time. I also should try to get into their older stuff. Loveless and m b v are great, but the few older songs I've heard haven't stuck.

Im a huge MBV fan, and Kevin Shields 's music and sonic approach...Even if i wasnt really expecting him to announce a new album, this felt kind meh.

The group has signed with the influential independent label Domino, and plans to release two new records.

“Our original plan was we would record both the albums back-to-back and then go tour on that,” he said. “And that would have been this year, you know, but everything really did slow down.”

...

Shields said the first of the two albums will be “warm and melodic,” while the second will be more experimental — a stark evolution from what he called his otherwise “very traditional” writing process to date.

“I’m not describing it properly on purpose,” he said, after a somewhat vague explanation. “I don’t want to give too much away because I could lay it out verbally, and then someone’s going to go, ‘That’s a really good idea.’” As for a timeline for release, he didn’t say. (“I think once I can get over to Ireland it will get done very quickly as my vocals are often the last thing to be recorded,” Butcher wrote. “They’ll probably be finished by the end of the year.”)

They definitely made a shift in their sound with Loveless and its surrounding EPs, though there's steps in that direction on Isn't Anything, e.g.:

When doing their disco journey should I do albums and EPs in release order or just albums?

I don't think it's essential to go chronologically, though it might be fun to get a sense for how the band's sound was evolving.

On the other hand, maybe it's worth simply jumping in with Loveless or mbv (their two strongest albums IMO) and then going deeper if the mood strikes.

Double J were playing a block of their stuff this afternoon and it was good. Never been into mbv, now might be the time.

I don't actually own of MBV's stuff, but I see they have vinyl and CD bundles on the new store. All three albums are included along with a comp that collects the EPs and some outtakes. I think I might spring for the CD bundle. I gave a listen to Isn't Anything on Spotify last night and it's definitely different than the follow-ups, but it's still got some of the bones and DNA of the MBV sound.

mickey, why do you continue posting here when most all of your posts reflect something ranging from dissatisfaction to disdain for much of the board? you're smart, and we share the same politics and a similar aesthetic sensibility. but since i've come back to reading the board more regularly in the last three months or so, i've gotten the impression that you're really miserable.

(i'm miserable and that's why i've come back)
