yeah, ATY. I've got it about .5 to 1 star ahead of Smile, depending on the day

Both good songs, but Smile takes it.
The combination of (Jeff's?) crunchy guitars and Jack's perfectly lazy drumming is:

All Those Yesterdays, although Smile is great. These are actually a bit similar in that they're one of the first (and few) instances of PJ really sounding playful and like they're having fun in the studio. I think I mentioned in the last matchup how the melodic (and lyrical) attributes of Yesterdays have a lightness and bounce to them that really makes the song stand out. It's a subtle but big jump from the melodrama of the first records to this in just several years.

Team Smile.
And when I voted earlier I was alone. A team of one. You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when I came back here to see how voting was going and I saw other votes for Smile, I knew there were more of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by eight.

Both are about middle tier for me. Smile by a little bit.

Underrated by me too. It’s better than I remember. Happy to have this tournament to remind me.

I have so much sense memory and emotional baggage wrapped up in No Code, you'd think it would be my favorite PJ album by a country mile. There's a personal story attached to each of those songs.
Smile is no different. A great song and one that has added meaning for me because of a person in my life.
This is the only match this round that wasn't a struggle for me. I adore ATY, though. I hate that one of these songs has to leave.

Two songs where simply seeing their titles makes me happy, that say a lot with a little, and that register with me in largely similar ways. I love both of these immeasurably. In the end I think "ATY" is just slightly more musically compelling, so in the absence of any other criteria I'm going to let that give it the edge, but both of these would have been on any PJ mix or playlist I would have made for myself over the last 20 years. They are wonderful, deceptively simple songs that set exactly the right paces for themselves and as such do not lend to overexposure or fatigue.
