So I was thinking a little bit ago about Pearl Jam’s Greatest Hits collection and how it didn’t have a new song on it. Sure, some that may not have been true “hits” in the chart sense of the word, but all had been released before. Then, I thought of how most new GH tracks were pretty much garbage and throw away tracks anyway. But there are some diamonds to be found in these sets. So what does RM consider the best of the new songs from Greatest Hits collections?
My pick is Mary Jane’s Last Dance from the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits album. Written while he was writing for the Full Moon Fever album and not recorded until Wildflower sessions, it’s probably become one of his best known tracks.

I mean, you hit the nail on the head with this one. What an amazing song.

These are slim pickings. Bands just suck after awhile and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

I don’t know that I’d rank these amongst the best.

REM - "Bad Day"
Bob Dylan - "When I Paint My Masterpiece"
Neil Young's Decade had a ton of songs that were "new" at the time, even though they were from previous sessions.

in college, i believe all four tenants brought TP's greatest hits into the household. after several months and many parties, every copy had been jacked from our collective collection.
