None of this is meant as an attack on the foods I mention. I just have never come across them in person

Yes, I have had polenta... is it the same?
Quite similar. They’re both cornmeal based. Savory grits dishes are very similar to polenta. Shrimp and grits is one of mankind’s greatest contributions.
