That wasn't an option when I bought this in December 2020.

But I'm sure that's a DLC, right?

The pod race on Tattooine was annoying and made me feel old. It was easy to win but for whatever reason took me like five tries

Don’t feel old. Podracing on the n64 was tough as fuck to win. I’d say they’re just staying true to that.

I played Lego Star Wars on the Wii with my son when he was little, so this is a nice nostalgia trip for me. But having recently replayed a bit of those older games, this one really misses the charm.

The dialog robs it of a lot of the goofiness it once had…not just because it’s annoyingly omnipresent and sometimes poorly done, but because a lot of the slapstick humor of those old games came from them trying to communicatively play out a Star Wars scene without words. It’s got a lot less personality this way, and it’s a lot less silly.

But I’m honestly fascinated by the level design.

If you were going to make a Lego game based on the Phantom Menace, you might set a playable level in, say, the dash to escape from Naboo. You might include the opportunity to fly through the trade federation blockade, or maybe to be R2 in space, dodging blaster shots and watching other astromechs eat it while you repair the hyperdrive.

Well, this game has a much better idea: they make that a cut scene. Instead, you get the opportunity to play as “guy taking a taxi to the senate” (you’re welcome) (take your time).

Maybe you’d add a quick escape fight with Maul in the desert to your game. You idiot. You fucking buffoon. This game knows people would rather skip past that and play a sequence where they wander around Boss Nass’s apartment wondering if he’s home or not.

I think the most important thing about these Lego games is that they be easy enough for small children to succeed at while still feeling like a bigger game. It mostly does that. But it only very occasionally feels as fun as the old Wii games. Also the camera is absolutely atrocious in a two player setting.
