Around the Bend vs Again Today vs Breakerfall

I like Around the Bend (thanks Kevin Davis), and Breakerfall is a fun song that gets flattened out by Binaural's production (which does a disservice to the straight ahead rockers. I liked this a lot more when they redid it as GSMF).

Yes, Again Today is a cover, but it is a complete reimagining of the original, and I fucking love it. It's the best version of this kind of Pearl Jam song, and it's a killer song to cover. It falls into the Crazy Mary category for me. Easy vote.

Around the Bend has an average of 46 votes per tournament, Again Today 12, Breakerfall 34.

I wouldn't have picked Around the Bend a few years ago, but it's really grown on me so it edges out Breakerfall.

This is pretty easy for me. A sweet little throw away ditty, a competent cover, and a great album opener.

I fully understand and appreciate why people love it so much.

I love Again Today, it’s probably the best thing they did 2010-2020. But Breakerfall is as good and it feels off to vote for a cover.

"Around the Bend" is a lovely lullaby that ties up No Code perfectly, but I rarely find it to be a song I seek out. If I've heard "Again Today," I don't remember it, and I'm sure it's got nothing on the aforementioned song. Whatever way, "Breakerfall" wins the day, as it's a killer opener, and a song that has grown greatly in my esteem. High energy, a powerful riff, great guitar and vocal parts. What's not to love?

Easiest vote of the round goes to Around the Bend.

"Around the Bend" is a beautiful song and even more beautiful recording -- it almost feels like a parlor ballad, with that sleepy melody, tasteful jazzy guitar, saloon-style piano, all in that warm blanket of glorious No Code production -- man I love it so much. There is nothing else in PJ's catalog like it. I love "Breakerfall" too but it's nowhere near as singular of a pleasure for me.

Voting for "Around the Bend!"

Everytime March Madness comes up I am again constantly reminded how poorly I know PJ's catalogue. I'm forever having to revisit songs and remind myself what the hell they sound like, usually preceded by having to figure out where the hell I can find them in my tunes library to re-listen in the first place.

I know Around the Bend of course, but I'm not particularly fussed about it. Gun to my head I can't actually confirm I've ever heard Again Today.
