Re: 33. Who Ever Said vs. Never Destination vs. Comatose
I like Never Destination (it's probably the second or third from the bottom on Gigaton, but that's a stacked record). Fun riff, spirited performance, great coda. But it is completely outclassed by these other two songs, both of which are 5 stars for me, or maybe just underneath. The kinds of songs I listened to incessantly for 6 months after their release. I love the both.
Comatose is a song they've written before, though I think this is maybe the best version of it. Scorching performance, killer bridge, awesome mike solo, and great lyrics condemning myopic Americans who refuse to open their eyes while the world burns. As relevant as ever.
Who Ever Said starts out as a solid, upbeat straight ahead rocker, but it pivots into that magical two and a half minute detour that's basically as long as Comatose. Great performances from everyone, world weary vocal from Eddie that refuses to give up the fight, fantastic lyrics, and "all the answers will be found in the mistakes that we have made" is an all-timer for me (but there are so many other great moments).
Start to finish Comatose is the better song, but they don't really have any other moments like that extended bridge in Who Ever Said, and I think I like it more than any one part of Comatose.
Who Ever Said BARELY edges it out. Both phenomenal songs. With the exception of Elderly Woman my two favorites in the round

Amazingly Comatose here. The other 2 are latter day Vedder plods.

Whoever Said though could switch to Comatose. I much rather listen to Whoever Said these days as comatose hasn't aged super well for me.

It's been a little while since I put Who Ever Said on. I forgot how much I love the beginning with the instruments gradually coming in and that rugged first verse. The way Eddie growls out 'drowing'. Great stuff.

Never Destination is good, though outclassed by the bulk of Gigaton. I'm a big Comatose fan, but an even bigger fan of Who Ever Said.

The stupid synth thing really kills my WES boner. That Comatose bridge continues to delight.

This is a pretty fair match -- all somewhat scrappy, crunchy PRAMG rockers, worthy of each other's company. "Who Ever Said" feels like the most accomplished of the three, though they all have things about them I really like.

Re: 33. Who Ever Said vs. Never Destination vs. Comatose
In contrast to Trag and Ms Harmless, I adore the synth pairing with the guitar in "Who Ever Said." It's another little quirk in a song that seems to be made of incongruous, but ultimately successful choices.
"Never Destination" is more straightforward, though not without its own small details that elevate it above being a simple genre pastiche. There's a certain kind of reckless abandon to the band's approach to the song that almost feels like it foreshadows Earthling.
"Comatose" is another one of those Avocado songs that I started out absolutely hating, but then later came to find a measure of enjoyment from. It rips with ferocity, bit it's still not a favorite song but any means.
All three are fine in my opinion, but I think I'm giving the nod to "Who Ever Said."

Re: 33. Who Ever Said vs. Never Destination vs. Comatose
I like never destination a lot even though it has all the elements for me to dislike it. its a great song to run to.
comatose is bottom 10. i don't think they captured it correctly in the studio, very jarring and irritating. I liked it as crapshoot.
WES is ok.

Who Ever Said put up a second round fight against I Got Shit in the second round last year, but couldn't best it.
Never Destination also made the second round, but lost against Oceans.
Comatose had its best year last year, getting to round 3 off the back of wins against Chinese and Olympic Platinum, before Take The Long Way knocked it out in the 3rd round.

It really is; Earthling had me re-listening to some records for the first time in a while, and I was very pleasantly surprised by how well this record holds up. It's definitely grown in my estimation since it first came out, and I already liked it quite a bit when it was first released.stip wrote:Fuck Gigaton is a good record.

Comatose is bad.
Never Destination is fine but the least of Gigaton.
Who Ever Said is a really good song.
Easy vote.

WES is the best of these 3, but Comatose does get way too much hate.
