Oy, another coin flip. Nothingman wins the studio matchup, Release wins the live matchup.
Release.

I agree with your assessment. I also always vote MM based on studio. Nothingman it is.

The studio cut of Nothingman is perfect but Release is perfect too. I mean, that studio version has meant more to me in my life than any other song ever.

Believe me I won't be upset if it wins. I know what I'll be voting for next round.

RM obviously loves Release, for good reason, but it’s never won MM. I’d love this to be the year.

Still got a long way to go. Going up against the previous winners if it wins this and the next match. Not a proper champion unless it wins there.

Totally. RM respects the hell out of Release, and we have a long tradition of pushing some great songs to “long shot” champions. Hoping this year the group decides Release finally gets to join the Champions club.

Yes, I could see the one who wins the final, getting a push in the champions round. We’ll see.

Great matchup here -- I stuck with "Nothingman," which at the end of the day I just feel like is the stronger composition. "Release" is many things -- a catharsis, an experience, an incantation, a series of beautiful, powerful moments. I love it, and I love its place in the catalog. But "Nothingman" is all of that for me too, but also has sturdy songwriting bones that I don't think "Release" necessarily does.
I swear I remember a Guitar World (or some other guitar magazine) interview with Stone circa 2002 or so where the interviewer asked him to name his favorite PJ song, and he immediately jumped to "Nothingman," citing it as an instance where everything about the writing and recording just came together. It feels that way to me too -- a song of natural ease and beauty, shining all the brighter considering how tense those sessions were reported to be otherwise.
I'd love to find that interview -- if memory serves he was asked to list some of his favorite songs by other artists as well, and he named Tom Waits's "Come On Up to the House."
