JJ Cale Has Passed Away

JJ Cale passed away at 8:00 pm on Friday July 26
at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, CA.

The legendary singer / songwriter had suffered a heart attack.
There are no immediate plans for services.

Donations are not needed but he was a great lover of animals so, if you like,
you can remember him with a donation to your favorite local animal shelter.

this one hits relatively hard. i don't think it's considered one of his classic records, but 'guitar man' got some radio play back in 1996 and the title track is what grabbed me. it was a fairly uptempo track, but there was still that cool, laid back vibe that permeates most of his songs, and that's really what hooked me. then, of course, i learned just what kind of impact he had- cocaine, call me the breeze, after midnight... all songs i was very familiar with from the classic rock radio i grew up on that he wrote.

i held out hope i'd get to see him one day, figuring the best chance i had would be if he played bonnaroo. sadly that won't be happening now. i'm spinning 'troubadour' now- if you listen to one jj cale record, you could do worse than this one.

JJ's music has played in my house weekly for the last 10 years. I really hoped to see him in person as well.

Im quite sad too hear this news, i saw it on a news site the other day, he was the one act i had left to see i think.
I heard of his music when i saw a documentary about the album, road to escondido, the one with eric clapton, but clapton said that jj cale had figured out how to live a happy life more than any one else he knew, so i checked him out and have been listening to him nearly every day since.
But i went for a drive yesterday and stuck 'roll on' into the cd player, and what an album for a last album, he would have been about 70 when he made it, and it sounds as good as anything he did in the 70s, if you haven't heard it, your missing out, if fact if you haven't heard jj cale music, your missing out.
But theres a song on it called "Leaving in the Morning" , and i wasn't able to listen to it at first, because its so sad, didn't fit in with the rest of his music, but after he died, i realized its a song about dying, and the second last song is called "roll on", which is one last reminder to take it easy, and then the last song called "bring down the curtain", a goodbye song, lyrics below.
How many musicians get to say goodbye like that ? not many, i can tell ya
