This is kind of fascinating to me, though it may also be the procrastination it is enabling. Pearl Jam's ballads are clearly the late career big ticket items. The singles get a big boost (probably due to pre-release listens). And the Spotify's general listening Pearl Jam preferences are VASTLY different from the board's.

There is bias toward the recent, post-spotify stuff, as that is how many of us consume new music. The mid career stuff was already out and consumed before being put on Spotify, so that wouldn't be reflected in the numbers.

True to a point - there would be a new album bump for post Spotify (so Backspacer -> though I don't know when it became dominant), but insofar as Spotify is how so many people listen to music now, it does also speak to the comparative ongoing interest in pre Spotify material

- The Spotify algorithm weights things in favor of newer stuff in a couple of ways.

- In my case, though I love the mid-career stuff, I don't really listen to PJ at all any more, despite the fact I've listened to them a billion times. I imagine the diehard PJ fans are perfectly happy with new stuff, and currently listen to it more than they listen to old stuff.

- Random people looking for Pearl Jam on Spotify are likely to listen to Ten-Vitalogy, then maybe check out the new albums to see what they're up to. I don't see any reason why their middle albums would suddenly get discovered now, or get regular play from hardcore PJ fans.

I bet most of those songs at the way top also appear on a lot of those "ultimate 90's hits," "rediscover grunge," etc. playlists that have them getting played a lot somewhat unintentionally by casual listeners. There's a pretty significant difference between those and even other early linchpin songs like "Corduroy," "Animal," etc., big songs for the band that are a rung or two down the commercial visibility ladder.

If there is a Spotify-curated PJ best-of playlist, I'd wonder how closely that list just mirrors that...
