This thread isn't really about The Ventures at all. I'm actually wondering where to go next. I like their sound, but there's no real edge to a lot of it. I'm curious about the sort of surf rock you hear in movies that feature more minor notes, heavier use of tremolo, and a much slower tempo. The kind of surf rock I'm talking about can be found in scenes centered on Bobby Briggs in David Lynch's Twin Peaks and that scene in Pulp Fiction when Mia and Vince are sharing a silence at Jack Rabbit Slim's.
Any suggestions, guys?

No immediate suggestions, but I was fortunate to see the Ventures on tour a few years ago, a year or two after their Hall of Fame induction. They were great. They're destined to keep on until they can't do it anymore. See them live if you can.

I love this stuff, but have never dug very deep. Satan's Pilgrims has a lot of potential.
I'm really interested in this too. I keep hearing Gremmie Out of Control and a few others in that style on Lost Dogs, and wondering where I go to hear the real thing rather than the PJ ripoffs (which I like, obviously).

I rediscovered Bombora by the Atlantics the other day. Such a great surf instrumental. I'll post a link when I get onto a laptop.

There's really no point in posting a link. I left my headphones at home, and I don't have internet there. Thanks for the offer, though.

I second the Dick Dale. First thing that came to mind.

Fair enough. If we're starting a surf rock thread I'll post this anyway as it's a pretty great single

A good sort-of-surf-rock song by mastaflatch's band
