The architecture. The home decor. The clothing. Is it because too much color might inflame the passions? (and we can't have that!) Is it a white people thing? Is it a necessity in an increasingly homogenized world?

"But Burtrold, if we paint the walls, then that might turn off certain customers..."

Beige is making a big comeback. Previous years we were painting everything grey, but now a lot of people are going back to beige. I hate it, personally.

we painted our front door (or back door, depending on what you call the front of a lake house) red and my mom nearly lost her g-damn mind.

we do too. and you would think someone that watches hours of HGTV where Benjamin Moore runs a bunch of commercials would feel the same way. But nope, everything has to be monochrome.

We went with a dark almost teal. Hard to describe. Like a navy teal.

There is an eagle in me and a mockingbird . . . and the eagle flies among the Rocky Mountains of my dreams and fights among the Sierra crags of what I want . . . and the mockingbird warbles in the early forenoon before the dew is gone, warbles in the underbrush of my Chattanoogas of hope, gushes over the blue Ozark foothills of my wishes—And I got the eagle and the mockingbird from the wilderness.

O, I got a zoo, I got a menagerie, inside my ribs, under my bony head, under my red-valve heart—and I got something else: it is a man-child heart, a woman-child heart: it is a father and mother and lover: it came from God-Knows-Where: it is going to God-Knows-Where—For I am the keeper of the zoo: I say yes and no: I sing and kill and work: I am a pal of the world: I came from the wilderness.

The Chiptole burrito I had a few nights ago tasted like beige. So it’s not confined to just American architectural and interior design.
