Speaking of Human Bass, it occurs to me that I've always "said" his name with "Bass" sounding like the fish. But obviously it should instead be "Bass" as in the instrument that Jeff Ament plays. Weird.

I think I've always thought it was the instrument, mostly because I've heard him speak, and he has a deep voice if I remember correctly. It is all a blur because it was him and some goats and I don't know what was happening.

I’ve always read it as the fish.

I pronounce it in my head like the guitar but I always thought of it as the fish. Like I would say "human base" and an image of a fish would flash across my mind's eye. how odd

Neither version makes sense regardless of whether he plays bass or fishes for bass.

I think y brain defaults to "fish" any time I read the word and the context isn't explicitly obvious.
