Pearl Jam's 'Ten' Album Hits 10 Million in U.S. Sales

By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | February 20, 2013 11:05 AM EST
Landmark album is the 22nd full-length to reach 10 million sales in the SoundScan era.
Pearl Jam's landmark debut album "Ten" becomes the latest addition to the 10 million-sellers club in the U.S.
This week, the 1991 Epic Records release surpasses the 10 million U.S. sales mark according to Nielsen SoundScan, making it the 22nd album to reach the threshold since the company began tracking data in 1991.
In the week ending Feb. 17, the album sold nearly 4,000 copies (up 159% over the previous week). That brings its total sales to about 1,000 over 10 million.
"I'm happily shocked to hear that. Wow," Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready tells Billboard on hearing of the feat. Back when the album was recorded, "we had no idea that it was going to ever do that well. I just felt like it was a really cool record and that I was in a good band."
"Ten" is the fourth album to hit 10 million U.S. sales since the start of 2012. In that span of time, "Ten" follows Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory," Usher's "Confessions" and Adele's blockbuster "21."
"21" now stands as the No. 15 best-selling album of the SoundScan era, with 10.4 million sold. It is currently about 186,000 copies behind Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time," which is in 14th place.
It should be a while before another album crosses the 10 million mark. While we had a quick succession of albums hit 10 million in the last year, the next-closest album to 10 million is still 400,000 copies away: Celine Dion's "Let's Talk About Love" (9.6 million). At the present, the album is selling well below 1,000 copies a week.
Since 1991, the highest selling album -- according to SoundScan -- is Metallica's self-titled 1991 release, which has moved 15.86 million. Shania Twain's "Come On Over" is in second place with 15.53 million and Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" is in third with 14.82 million.
In fourth place is Backstreet Boys' "Millennium" (12.21 million), followed by the Beatles' "1" (12.16 million), "The Bodyguard" soundtrack (12.06 million), Santana's "Supernatural" (11.73 million), Creed's "Human Clay" (11.64 million) and Bob Marley and the Wailers' "Legend" (11.26 million) at Nos. 5-9.
Rounding out SoundScan's top 10 selling albums since 1991 is 'N Sync's "No Strings Attached," with 11.14 million.

Legendary album. Alive was the first song I heard. My Dad took me to "The Wall" to get the tape sometime after I seen an interview on Headbangers Ball. I was 12 at the time I think and I have no idea how I managed to allow my parents to let me stay up for HBB.
Here is my order of track ranking.
1. Black
2. Release
3. Oceans
4. Porch
5. Once
6. Jeremy
7. Alive
8. Even Flow
9. Why Go?

Still Want to Hear it Live the Most: Black
Want to hear it live the least: Even Flow

The raw energy of this album still blasts out the speakers. I was always up and down on this album, mostly because it was so good that you had to defend the rest of the catalogue against it to casual fans - but I became even more of a fan after the reissue. Of all the reissues, this one certainly seemed to me to add the most in terms of enhancing the experience.
First song I remember being memorable was Even Flow, mostly because at 14 my friend and I walked around our neighborhood singing it for no good reason, while another friend across town basically lived his life with this album in the background at all times. Ah, high school.,,

Why does everyone forget about Master/Slave? That's one of those most interesting things they've ever done.

I liked that they used it as intro music on the 2006 tour.bodysnatcher wrote:Why does everyone forget about Master/Slave? That's one of those most interesting things they've ever done.

Re: Ten: Official album thread
I don't forget it. Far from. But I never "count" it because it's broken up. It's intro/outtro music as is on Ten.bodysnatcher wrote:Why does everyone forget about Master/Slave? That's one of those most interesting things they've ever done.

Re: Ten: Official album thread
Ah Ten the album that started it all.It seams everyone in the band is on the same page on this album
Ed is trying to win these guys over and going all out as a singer. Mike is hell bent on being a guitar god. We will never hear another album like this from Pearl Jam it stands alone in there history. That is okay I love the album, but I really love the journey they have taken me on with the other eight records. Had they made Ten2 Ten3 and so on rock radio and mtv would have been overjoyed. Instead they grew and changed, made music on their terms. They survived despite Ten not because of it. I am not saying it is not a great record it is. It is just that the band that made No Code and Yield would never be on the cover of Hit Parade. The band that made Ten was.

Re: Ten: Official album thread
This album is so legendary, It's perfect, there is no fillers all the 12 songs (including hidden track) are so great. This album is not my favorite because there are so much songs I have heard some much in radio, overall the best album of Pearl Jam. My only complain could be the track listing, though any song in this album could be first or last.
This is my favorite track listing of Ten:
1. Release
2. Master/Slave
3. (Master/Slave)-> Once
4. Deep
5. Why Go
6. Black
7. Jeremy
8. Garden
9. Oceans
10. Even Flow
11. Porch
12. Alive

While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

Bring back the occasional instrumental/mood track like Master/Slave. Binaural would have benefitted from the inclusion of Foldback and/or Thunderclap.
