Were they recording an album with Brendan O'Brien but scrapped it?
The only thing we've heard from these sessions is Can't Deny Me (and possibly Retrograde?)
The press release for Can't Deny Me said it was from their upcoming album. But then nothing.

Definitely scrapped sessions. One day it will see the light of the bootleg world, and let’s hope whoever drops that at least has the sense of humor to title it “Forthcoming”

I don't think they recorded many songs with O'brien, just a few and then decided it was time for a change.

Pearl Jam's new track from their forthcoming album on Monkeywrench/Republic Records is out now!
“Can’t Deny Me” was co-produced by Pearl Jam and Brendan O'Brien. The track was recorded in Seattle last month and released as a surprise early download to Ten Club members last Saturday.
Eddie wrote the song's lyrics set to music written by Mike. Jeff created the single's artwork in collaboration with PJ's longtime Videographer, Kevin Shuss.
“Can’t Deny Me” is available now in the SHOP and via all digital download and streaming services.
Pearl Jam kicks off their TOUR of South America in Santiago, Chile today.

Seems like they were atleast somewhat close to an album release.... Whatever it was, it did got scrapped. Only Retrograde made it onto Gigaton.
Im a bit fascinated by the unreleased PJ-stuff...but come one...It's time for another Lost Dogs...

No doubt this will attain mythical status within the Jamily, not unlike Chrome Dreams or Electric Nebraska. To think they're sitting on an absolute gold-mine of music...Can't Deny Me was but a sumptuous tease of what they've got hidden away.

Can't Deny Me bombed. Nobody wanted punk/protest Pearl Jam anymore. So they decided to head back to the drawing board

i love protest pearl jam, and even punk pearl
jam much of the time. That song in theory was everything i wanted. it just was a weaker effort.

If the lyrics weren't so dumb sounding, I probably would've been okay with CDM.

Stone Gossard I believe stated it was one of the early ones they wrote straight off Jeff’s demo.
Seven o’clock was also a result of a jam in the first session
And Ed debuted River Cross September 2017 for what it’s worth.

The instrumental track is actually really great and has excellent cowbell clarity. It really pops.

agreed, and I like Ed's snarling performance as well, it reminds me of Vitalogy; considering the lyrics are far less embarrassing than some that made it onto albums in recent years, I like it more than some here and maybe most

What's worse than "You may be rich, but you can't control me."?

rumor was that Tchad Blake recorded the original cowbell but then the band didn’t like the direction he was taking things and then brought in Brendan to mix the cowbell and didnt like how he interpreted it and then asked the guy that does the commercial overdubs for Chi Chi’s restaurant to take a swing at it and they were blown away by his work and the all you can eat chips and salsa
