Do you speak another language? Would you like to?

Post by Jorge »

Do you speak a language other than your mother tongue? If so, which ones? If not, is it something you'd like to do?

I'm only totally fluent in English and Spanish, but I can carry a conversation in French decently. I've always wanted to learn German, I really like that language

I used to be able to understand conversational Spanish fairly well but too many years away from it has all but obliterated it.

I've been learning Irish / Gaeilge for a couple of years, and have a tiny bit of Spanish from school

I've been practicing RM for like 20 years but only gotten worse at it.

I was advancing in Spanish for a while. But that's more or less gone, too. Which is super embarrassing because my wife is fluent. So when we travel it's super awkward for me. I get made fun of a lot, and rightly so.

I would love to learn Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Irish.

Norwegian is my mother tongue, and with it Danish and Swedish are easy.

I write in, speak and listen to English every day.

Have known some French and German through both schooling and travelling, but do not practice them, so my knowledge is fairly dormant, and probably slipping away. Have learnt some Romanian and Filipino (Tagalog and Hiligaynon) but not in school, and only remember a little at this time.

I have to say I’m quite impressed with our non-English speakers here on RM. All you guys are fucking great with English. And since he’s the only one I’ve spoken to and whose voice I’ve heard, bonus points to Jorge. If I didn’t already know English was a second language, I’d never have believed it.

I don't, and i'd love to, but there's no way I'd remember any of it if I didn't use it daily. I can barely remember things that were said or happened to me this morning.

I have mad respect for people like you who can. That's just one reason why you're the second greatest RMer of all time.

Actually I may be overstating my French skills. A full conversation would be pretty stilted. It's more like I can communicate with French people in case of a French emergency
