Sam and Nina Simone are easily the two artists for whom I have the biggest discrepancy between "how much I listen to them" and "how often I talk about them on the internet." They're literally the only people besides Tom Waits that I never go anywhere without.
I love all of it...the Soul Stirrers, the transition efforts, the bubble gum pop and the Copa and movie song covers and old folk ballads. The Harlem Square Club is mind blowing, ain't That Good News is like honey, and if I ever get around to acquiring Night Beat on vinyl, none of you will ever hear from me again.

sam's music offers that kind of desperation you can only get from a guy who drunkenly assaulted a hotel manager and was killed in what was ruled a justifiable homicide

Same Cooke is good stuff. I put his Portrait of a Legend on last weekend at our Sunday BBQ. Fit the mood perfectly.

...and that can only be nurtured by using your status as singer in a gospel-centric church group to fuck the shit out of underage girls in every town you pass through.

It's mostly for the "cake and ice cream" reference. After that song finishes, the wedding party will join us on the floor for "Twist and Shout."

Who you callin' spook, peckerwood?
I dig his music, can't say I cared for him as a person. Can't go wrong with old school soul music, though. Simple, straight-up production and genuine songwriting, it never gets old.

"Portrait of a Legend" is one of the best compilation albums ever.
