Who You Are vs. Not For You vs. Sometimes

I like this matchup because it has three great slow burners together. Not For You is so good though.

It's not Sometimes, which has always been just fine to me.

Once I relaxed enough to enjoy Who You Are for what it is it morphed into one of my favorite songs on No Code. Some days it might be my favorite. The high points of Not For You trump anything in this thread, but that outro just goes on for way too long. I think NFY gets my vote since the 'all that's sacred...' verse is one of my favorite lyrical passages in the catalog.

For the record, I love the outtro. When I whine that Pearl Jam doesn’t let their songs breathe enough, it is Not For You and Present Tense I am referencing on what I wish they would do more of.

I don't mind an extended outro. It's pretty effective on Present Tense, but NFY has always just felt a little purposeless to me. The end of Present Tense just lets the chrysalis effect of the music play through to completion.

Some unfortunate draws for No Code this round.

This one sucks. Probably three of my top 20 PJ songs. Went with Sometimes.

All 4-4.5 tracks loved for different reasons. Going with Sometimes today.

Not For You is dark and menacing. It gets my vote.

Not For You still hits. But then again so does Sometimes.

Im way more interested/excited about the Who You Are/Somtimes version of PJ than the DM/Not For you PJ - these days

Who you are and sometimes are songs that could not have been written and so beautiful presented by any other band of that era and is what set PJ apart from everything else.

I agree. "Not For You" was one of my favorite Pearl Jam songs early in my fandom, but I don't connect to it all that deeply anymore. I went with "Who You Are" for this match, just because "Sometimes" always feels more fully realized when it's part of the album than on its own.

“Who You Are” for me

This is by far the toughest match for me this round. I think all these songs are great. I may slightly lean towards Sometimes, but it's a very close race no matter who wins for me.
