at their instruments.

As opposed to being kicked out due to personality conflicts or other reasons.

Who couldn't cut the mustard?

Seems to happen a lot with drummers. The first drummer for Oasis, for instance. Also the guy from Sunny Day Real Estate who was in Foo Fighters for like a minute.

William Goldsmith. This one always surprised me because surely Dave knows what a good drummer sounds like. Why was he brought into the fold in the first place if he didn't have the chops? Was there no one else?

That whole story is kinda nuts. Apparently Dave and the producer for The Color and the Shape would joke about how bad he was. Dave re-recorded a bunch of his parts without letting him know. They only ended up keeping about 3 minutes worth of his drumming in that album. Dave doesn't come off great in that story.

Oh, seems I have it wrong, he wasn't exactly kicked out:
Goldsmith only later learned from Mendel that his contribution was being replaced. Feeling betrayed and unhappy with Grohl's suggestion that he continue on as the band's touring drummer only, Goldsmith decided to leave.

Kind of like Corgan's approach to guitar and bass, I guess. The results speak for themselves but yeah that'd be a bitter pill to swallow.

I mean, he kind of was.

It's just Dave was really terrible at going about it.

I thought it was the first other guitarist Everman, but he was never good enough, I think they brought him in because he had some connection to get them ahead in some way.

The original guitarist for The Police, Henry Padovani:
However, Sting was dissatisfied with Padovani's technical abilities, paving the way for Andy Summers, whom they met after a brief tour as part of Mike Howlett's band Strontium 90. For a brief period in July and August 1977, the Police performed as a four-piece with Padovani and Summers sharing guitar duties. Having insisted from the start that he wanted to be the sole guitarist for the band, Summers was unhappy with the situation. Padovani himself felt that the disparity in technical ability between the two of them made this an awkward lineup. The night after an aborted studio session with former Velvet Underground multi-instrumentalist John Cale in the producer's chair, Copeland called Padovani and asked him to leave the band.

Bob Weir and Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan were kicked out of the Grateful Dead in '68 for not being musically as dedicated as Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh. They were reinstated later that year and went on to become key components of their sound, but it's an interesting moment in the band's early history.

He may have been related to someone who had an inside connection with a record label or promoter? It’s been a while since I read up on my grunge history.
