Is this still a valuable IP? Do people care about anything but the original books / movies?

Harry Potter has never been my thing but I think its still insanely popular probably since no one has had a chance to mess it up yet.

The video game outsold everything by a huge amount, so they have that going for them.

Yes, hugely so

Sort of embarrassed I enjoyed some of these books as a kid.

This has to end up a mess, right? Its still way too soon to be remaking these; they’re casting an American actor in one of the most important roles; and one of your writers (Andy Greenwald) may not have read the books.

I didn't realize this was a remake. It does seem pretty early and there are some pretty iconic performances in those movies. Still, HBO doesn't usually make trash. It'll be interesting to see how this comes out.

Who will likely be dead before this 10 year project is complete. Get someone who is 60 and age them up a bit.

I think the issue is that it tends not to work nearly as well as Brits playing American.

I cannot separate his voice from his '3rd rock from the sun' character or that movie where he was own evil twin. It's just not Dumbledore. In the HP movies both actors that played Dumbledore were able to deliver a quiet but immensely powerful presence to the character on the screen that made his story arc resonate. I'm not sure Lithgow is that type of actor.

Mostly cause Americans don't care and Brits get way up their asses about it.

And I like Lithgow well enough, but this is bad casting.

Maybe he'll prove me wrong? But I'm not hopeful.
