I had it at three when it dropped and I think that's still the correct grade.

I think it was a 4 when it came out, but I say 3 now.

4 then and 4 now. A very good late-period album.

3 stars.

Most of the songs are pretty good, but I really dislike the way it sounds and don't find myself revisiting it very often as a result (in fact I'm not sure I've played it at all since last summer). Last time I ranked the albums I had it second from the bottom, ahead of only Lightning Bolt.

I wish 3.5 was an option. With this scale I'd bump it up on the strength of the live performances, but down if it's just the studio album itself.

This thread is about the album, and not the tour cycle
I'd say it's a strong 3.49 then. I like most of the songs, but there's something missing here. The production robs it of a certain kind of character that defines the group's strongest albums.

Well said. Can't argue with any of that.

ah yes, the 5-star, perfect album. we're talking the likes of the Beatles' Revolver, Radiohead's OK Computer and Kid A, Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the Beach Boys' Smile, Nick Drake's Pink Moon, the Velvet Underground's eponymous album, the Talking Heads' Remain in Light, and . . . checks notes . . . ah yes, Pearl Jam's Dark Matter.

I like it just as much as a year ago.

But I hate Serban Ghenea even more than a year ago.
