One of my deployments in the late nineties was a NATO op. I worked with some cool people from all over Europe on that one. And the head of NATO military ops was a US general who would have made a great President, General Wes Clark

If there was no NATO, half of Europe would have been invaded. The US would eventually be drawn into WW3.

What are we going to reinvent as a counterweight to Russia: Poland-Lithuania or the Austro-Hungarian empire?

Hopefully deter Russia? The UK and France couldn't take on Libya without US help, so it's not looking great. Maybe the Green party in Germany can make eco-friendly Leopard 2s a reality.

From a purely Machiavellian standpoint, should the US strengthen Russia in order to provide both a check on European power and a land route/second front into China in case of a conflict? Is that the plan?

Putin would never double cross his comrade Krasnov.

That would be like Saudi Arabia betraying us. Would we even notice? They are ants.

Plus they'd lose contested land in the east to China.

Weird that China and Russia have never gotten along in any real way. You'd think they would bond over mongol invasions, communism, and brutalizing religious people, but nope.

Maybe they had a US v Canada thing many centuries ago and the relationship never recovered.
