The article clearly says that disappointing doesn't necessarily mean "bad." In fact, for some albums, the author acknowledges that they're great (e.g., Kid A). It's just that fans were disappointed based on their expectations.

Who was disappointed by Kid A based on expectations? I mean, I knew a few people (myself included), but it was years before it was "ok" to suggest the album wasn't a world-shattering masterpiece and for the first six months it was out you couldn't have a music conversation with someone that didn't somehow involve them telling you how amazing it was. It ended up near or at the top of just about every Best of the 00's Critics list. I'm tempted to read this actual article, but I feel like it's probably gonna be lazy and piss me off.

It's pretty lazy. Thing is, every album by everyone disappoints somebody. It's just as easy to argue that fans jumped off after Ten as that they did after No Code. However, I like that the list acknowledges that a great album can still be called a disappointment based on what actually happened.

Also I'm flummoxed that the last Kanye West album is on the list but the last Incubus album isn't. That steaming pile of cow dung is probably the only album from a band I generally like that I've ever called a steaming pile of cow dung.

It's their Riot Act - a return to rock that a lot of people don't really understand, and that didn't sell very well despite a couple of very strong lead singles. Adore is absolutely their Binaural - dark, moody and unmemorable to most outsiders, but beloved to the band's hardcore fans.

And if we're continuing the comparison, Zeitgeist is their Pearl Jam and Oceania is their Backspacer - both are "return to rock" albums, but the first one is dark and political while the second is fun and more light-hearted. Pearl Jam is a much better album than Zeitgeist while Oceania is a much better album than Backspacer.

This is also reminding me that Billy Corgan is a much better songwriter than every member of PJ combined but wastes it a lot more by putting out albums he thinks people (or critics) want, rather than what he wants to do. That's why he's a three-time offender on this really stupid list.

From the beginning without reading the list, I was skeptical of agreeing with much of anything from a site called "Guyism"
