It definitely was not when I started reading it. I remember a ton of controversy and drama and that was a big part of the intrigue for me. And eventually after reading it long enough I formed an opinion and started posting.

RM had lots going for it including an eclectic cast of characters; some unlike any I had met in real life as a teenager in a rural community.

Guys like tree_ and washing_machine were the first real hipsters I ever met. They were beyond me.

i'm sure there were disputes here and there, but nothing that'd take over the board like they tend to do now. the first big culture clash was several pit posters that were banned or grew tired of the modding over there and migrated here in one big influx. they made their presence known immediately, which divided the existing RM population at the time. some loved and welcomed them, some hated them. balki, clark griswold, 1/2faithfull, pjdoll, schlitz - they had their own clique and unique style. oh, and malice too. i think doug is the only one left now.

When I first found RM I thought it was exactly the kind of community I'd been dying to find. I loved it. Over the decades since, it's shifted a lot. I try not to be an old man yelling at clouds, but back in my day...

I really do miss what RM used to be. Still, a place I can spend time and find meaningful connection. But what I think I loved most about it back in the day has largely faded. I've certainly tried to adjust, and it' been mostly an abject failure. I've tried different hats and voices and styles to try to keep up or grasp at relevancy. Virtually all of those attempts have back-fired.

But it certainly isn't just RM. The whole world has changed so much, so quickly. Technology and Social Media has done a lot of damage. Obviously, IRL, but also to communities like this one. People change. Attitudes change. Times change. It is what it is.

Can some please remind me who the original WTOB? was and who he feuded with?

And the same for Woodburn.

Like were they from the PIT crew or somewhere else?

I actually have no idea. Personally, I always thought it was geg. There was a 2-3 year gap between 05/06 and 08 when I disappeared and I think that's when woodburn was really active? When I came back, norah, jorge, mecca, tryinmorning and several others were here acting like I was the new guy.

One thing that newer RMers might not realize is that there was a board before the archived board.

i joined right around 2002/2003, and i remember it being somewhat cliquey, but definitely more active. i think i posted exclusively in the sports forum for the first 6-7 years or so.

What's funny is that I don't remember dev joining at all.

I know he wasn't an original RMer, so there is a dev-less era that I was a part of, but when dev began is cloudy.

Somewhere between 2002 and 2006. Before Jorge and TryingMorning etc. but not by much? Though I seem to have been reading longer than them because I think I know more of the history. When I first started posting I wanted leaks but I stayed for the drama.

I kinda think my first run on RM was around 2002. Totally different place by then, and i was here mainly to talk about Pearl Jam. But i met great wonderful people like Angi, King Jeremy and Juvenal. Angi and KJ even sent me a box with PJ Holiday Singles!! my first batch of them. It was a very incredible moment.

Also met Maya, an israeli girl who became a pretty good friend on a personal level.

I think i came back around maybe 2006? i dont remember really. And i agree with Joe, internet was already a different beast and the board was another thing, very enjoyable but least friendly. I would imagine in 2020 or 2021 was even worse for new posters maybe haha.

Still, this is my favorite internet forum and social media by far. Lots of great info, very fun people too, very cool. It can get ugly these days if let it but ey, its just a post!
