does anyone know how this came about? with sly stone's recent death i've heard this song alot recently, and i listened to pearl jam's cover yesterday, which i haven't heard in forever. i love it. is there a connection to chicago? i know brendan obrien played keys on the song with them, maybe it was his idea? it seemed to be completely out of their wheelhouse, especially at the time. i know they've done a shit ton of covers since, but this one still kinda sticks out as an oddball.

i get that, it just seemed like an out of the box cover, especially at this point. i know they did 'dock of the bay' so maybe this is them being open to covering a broader range of songs. and by them i mean eddie vedder. i always thought covering this was stones idea lol

Dock of the Bay made sense since the songwriter and guitarist on the original recording performed it with them.

that's what i'm saying. it's not like sly stone was in attendance. i would have thought at the time EV would still be sticking to punk/the who. instead they play a soul song from the 1960s. don't get me wrong, they should do this more often.

Rats is a dead giveaway. I agree though, Eddie really shines on at least these two gems: Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) & Someday At Christmas

Maybe Sly WAS there. It’s not like 10 people at that show would’ve known who he was at that point.

I liked Let My Love Open The Door better from that show anyway. I wish they’d bring that one back and retire Baba.

Let My Love Open the Door is incredible. i've heard eddie cover it by himself, but the way the whole band rips through it at this show is awesome. i would put it 3 or 4 in the setlist, first fast song.
