WARNING: TOILET FLAPPERS ARE DANGEROUS

Always check your toilet bowl flappers to make sure they are not leaking small amounts of water into the bowl.
If not functioning properly, this can lead to a steady water use and a surprisingly high water bill.
As needed, utilize a professional plumber to ensure the seal is thorough.
The most minor defect can lead to thousands of gallons of unintended water use.

I rent and don't pay for water, so I don't really worry about the water bill. But I will say that we JUST got our toilet flapper replaced yesterday! This is a very timely thread, numbers.

"Toilet Flappers" was also unfortunate slang in the 1920s for a certain type of lady. Just FYI. Be careful with your language, 96.

Seems like anyone could change out a flapper without much trouble...

was aghast to know that a minisculely leaky flapper can use an extra 30-40,000 gallons of water per month!
think of how many un-diagnosed flappers are out there in the world leaking potable water to the sewer
such a waste!
California droughts? Fix the Flappers!
Missisiippi low? Fix the Flappers!!
Colorado River dry? Fix the Flappers!!

i did this for one and it appeared to work but then it did not very quietly and receded and the surprise was to see an extra 35,000 gallons of water use on my bill!
I have turned off that toilet entirely until the plumber can come
silent killer

Probably a close correlation to renters per capita in those areas.

Maybe this is why our Chicago condo building’s water bill has increased substantially. No one can figure out why.

plumber came today to check out the 'let
for the cost of trouble-shooting the inside, made sense to just replace the whole thing
new shitter gets installed next week.
then they will inspect the rest of the house
i am gonna get scared straight on this leakage sleuthing expedition
and go broke
but at least i will have one new classy high quality shitter to take poops in

I legit sent some links on this to our HOA board last week, and predictably received no response. Business as usual.

i bet a huge % of toilets in the US have this problem
they age
people don't understand the implication
unless it smacks them in the face when the bill comes

The elderly owners in our condo building blamed the Latino renters for the increase in our water bill. They had some visitors for a few days once, saw them coming and going, and have decided they’re running an illegal boarding house. More toilet and shower usage.
It’s come up multiple times and we’d always have to awkwardly downplay it.

having tried to decode how tf my water usage could suddenly increase by 35,000 gallons of water i found that
most toilets only use about 1-2 gallons per flush
a 10 minute shower uses about 20-25 gallons
so would need to be a lot of people in there to move the needle
also:
kitchen sink usage can be like 1-2 gallons per minute
a load of laundry is like 10 gallons
a dishwasher load is like 10 gallons
all signs point to flappers

I've replaced a flapper or two, in my day. there's usually an audible clue. absent that, miniscule water movements in the bowl. be vigilant
